The Players
Three teams, a whole new faction… what could go wrong?
As it turns out, not much… OMG’s Redkite Security and Blackthorn Mercenaries are established opponents on the field but the addition of Green Dragon Enterprise meant that the ‘front line’ was more of a fluid concept. No matter how safe you felt in your captured building, you weren’t. From anyone!
Expectation: A lot of friendly fire, players getting irked about losing ground too quickly.
Reality: Only a little friendly fire from ambiguously identified targets, plenty more action and a much more interesting game! Good trigger discipline, fair play and a fair fight.
The Venue
I heard tales circulated about the best magfed paintball you’d have played to date, an old RAF training camp and derelict buildings, the absolute necessity of a tactical torch and nerves of steel... Sure, why not? Expectation: A big(ish) building surrounded by smaller houses/sheds, and being more worried about the roof collapsing than enemy fire. Reality: A delicate line between shabby-chic and post-war apocalyptic, possible more the latter. Sprints in the open and covert hide and seek in the (seemingly structurally sound!) buildings. It was easy to get lost in the enormity of the site, often ending up closer to enemy spawn than your own.
The Gameplay
If CQB is your style, you’ll not be disappointed! Snipers have their place here, but this field is for the short barrels for sure.
Expectation: Objectives of a reasonable difficulty, a lot of head shots, loud and aggressive play style. Player chaos and overcrowding, not maximizing the potential game play.
Reality: Objectives of an intense difficulty but with ample field to achieve them in. Only sneak until it gets loud, then go ham. Grenades, snap shooting, not too many head shots. Having to exercise every single iota of CQB training you’ve ever ingested through experience or video. Never sure if it’s your team round that corner… Very malleable front line and plenty of back-up fire. With an advantage in numbers Redkite dominated the the other two factions on day one, but a valiant rally from Blackthorn and Green Dragons on day two say the points even out resulting in a narrow win for RedKite.
Final scores:
Redkite Security: ¥26,850 Blackthorn Mercenaries: ¥24,290 Green Dragon Enterprise: ¥18,470 Basically, if you’re a magfed player you need to get in on this event. And if you’re not a magfed player, you will be by the end of it! See you on the field. What are your best memories from Ragnarok 3? Leave them in the comments below!
